Compare the full vehicle asking price - not a down payment - and leave room in your budget for taxes, registration, insurance and maintenance.

How much mileage is too much for a used car?

There is no single mileage cutoff that tells you whether a used car is a good purchase. Consider its age, service records, condition and upcoming maintenance alongside the odometer reading. A car with more than 100,000 miles deserves careful evaluation, but mileage alone should not decide the purchase.

What should I check when buying a used car in Chicago?

Look beyond the paintwork. Have the undercarriage, frame, brake lines and suspension checked for corrosion or damage. Inspect tire wear and test the brakes, steering, battery, heater and defroster. Chicago driving conditions make these checks particularly useful, and an independent inspection can reveal issues that a short test drive may miss.

What taxes and fees should I expect when buying a used car?

Request a written out-the-door price showing the vehicle price, applicable sales tax, title and registration charges, dealership fees and any optional products you choose. The exact amount depends on the transaction and registration details.

For a financed purchase, also review the annual percentage rate, finance charge and total payments. The purchase price and the total cost of borrowing are different figures.

Can I negotiate the price of a used car?

You can discuss the asking price with our team, although an adjustment is not guaranteed. Compare similar vehicles by model year, mileage, condition and equipment, then consider the complete written offer-not just the monthly payment. Government taxes and official title and registration charges are not negotiable, even where the vehicle price or optional products may be.

Can I get financing with bad credit or a limited credit history?

You can contact Outlaw about financing even if your credit needs work. We welcome financing enquiries from customers with different credit backgrounds. Approval and terms depend on the application, lender requirements and selected vehicle.

A financing enquiry is not an approval guarantee. Ask what information is needed and whether a credit check will be performed before applying.

Is buy here, pay here the same as bad-credit financing?

No. Buy here, pay here typically means the dealership finances the purchase directly. Bad-credit financing can instead involve a separate lender.

Before agreeing to any financing arrangement, confirm who the lender is, where payments go, whether a credit check is required and how payments are reported to credit bureaus. A dealership offering financing does not automatically mean it operates a buy-here-pay-here program.

What determines my down payment and interest rate?

There is no single down payment or interest rate that applies to every buyer. Lenders may consider your credit history, income, existing debts, loan amount, repayment term and the vehicle itself. A down payment reduces the amount you need to borrow.

Request a written quote showing the amount due upfront, annual percentage rate, loan length, monthly payment and total payments before deciding.

Should I get preapproved by a bank or credit union before visiting?

A pre-approval can help you understand your budget and compare financing offers. Look at the annual percentage rate, repayment term and overall borrowing cost rather than choosing by monthly payment alone.

Does Outlaw inspect its used cars before sale?

Yes. Our vehicles undergo a 120-point mechanical inspection before being offered for sale. The published checklist covers areas including the engine and drivetrain, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, tires, body and undercarriage.

Can I have a used car inspected by my own mechanic?

Yes. We welcome an independent pre-purchase inspection as an additional check before you buy. Contact us to coordinate arrangements for the vehicle you’re considering.

An outside mechanic’s assessment gives you another opportunity to understand its condition, identify upcoming maintenance and ask questions before committing to the purchase.

Can I see a vehicle history report before buying?

Ask our team for the available history information on your selected vehicle. Review the vehicle identification number, title history, recorded accidents, mileage entries and available service records.

A history report is useful, but it does not replace a mechanical inspection or guarantee that every past event was reported. Our vehicle history report guide explains what to look for.

How can I check whether a used car has an open recall?

Use the vehicle identification number, or VIN, in the NHTSA recall lookup. Review any open safety recalls and ask about their repair status before purchasing.

A vehicle inspection and a recall check serve different purposes. For an unresolved recall, contact the manufacturer’s authorized dealership about the applicable repair and its availability.

Does a 120-point inspection mean a vehicle is manufacturer-certified?

No. A dealership inspection does not, by itself, establish that a vehicle belongs to an automaker’s certified pre-owned program.

When a car is described as “certified,” ask who provides the certification, what standards apply and what written coverage comes with it. Review the inspection results and warranty documents separately rather than assuming the label guarantees particular benefits.

Do used cars come with a warranty in Illinois?

Coverage depends on the vehicle and applicable terms. Review the Buyers Guide and ask about any dealer warranty, remaining manufacturer coverage or optional service contract.

Illinois also requires 15-day/500-mile powertrain protection for some eligible used vehicles, subject to legal limits and exclusions. Confirm what applies to your vehicle before signing. A dealership inspection is not itself a warranty. Illinois Attorney General

Can I return a used car if I change my mind?

Do not assume there is an automatic return period. Federal law does not require a dealership to give you three days to cancel a vehicle purchase.

Ask us about any written return or exchange terms before signing, and keep a copy of the agreement. Change-of-mind returns are separate from applicable warranty rights or other legal protections.

What documents should I bring when buying a used car?

Bring a valid driver’s license for a test drive and arrange proof of insurance before taking delivery. Financing may require additional documents, such as proof of income and address. For a trade-in, have the title or current loan information available.

Call ahead for a checklist suited to your purchase, lender and trade-in situation so missing paperwork does not delay your visit.

Who handles the title and registration when I buy from an Illinois dealer?

For a vehicle purchased from an Illinois dealership, the dealer must submit the required title, registration and sales-tax paperwork on the buyer’s behalf.

Before signing, check your name, address, vehicle identification number and any lienholder information. Tell our team whether you need new plates or want to discuss transferring eligible existing plates, and keep copies of your purchase documents.

Do I need a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker after buying a car?

Chicago residents who use a vehicle in the city generally need a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker. When you acquire a vehicle, the City Clerk requires you to purchase a sticker or transfer an existing sticker to that vehicle within 30 days.

Will my used car need an emissions test in the Chicago area?

It depends on the vehicle and where it is registered. Most 1996-and-newer gasoline-powered passenger vehicles in the testing area become subject to testing after they are four years old. Fully electric and diesel-powered vehicles are generally excluded, along with certain other categories.

Check your vehicle’s status with the Illinois Air Team. A dealership’s mechanical inspection does not replace a required state emissions test.

Who buys used cars in Chicago, and can I sell my car to Outlaw?

Can I trade in a car that I still owe money on?

It may be possible. Start by comparing your lender’s current payoff amount with the vehicle’s appraised trade-in value. If the payoff is higher, the difference is called negative equity.

That balance does not disappear when you trade in. You may need to pay it separately or seek approval to include it in new financing, which increases the amount borrowed.

How do I arrange a test drive?

Call our team with the listing, stock number or vehicle identification number for the car you want to see. We can discuss its availability and arrange a suitable time for a test drive.

Bring your valid driver’s license and ask about any additional requirements when booking. Confirming the vehicle before leaving home helps avoid an unnecessary trip.

What are Outlaw Motor Company’s opening hours?
